Background information
The War Memorial was dedicated in May 1927 on land given by the trustees of
the Wepre Hall Estate and was supplied and erected by local Connah鈥檚 Quay
stonemason, Mr. Edward Jones. It cost in the region of 拢1,000. In a cavity
beneath the base there is an oak box containing a sealed bottle and inside it a
sheet of parchment detailing the history of the memorial and the names of the
committee and ex-service men, by whose efforts it was raised; the box also
contains newspapers and military badges and buttons of the Royal Welsh
Fusiliers and other Regiments. The opening ceremony was performed by Colonel T.
H. Parry who in his address said This memorial was a sacred memorial and it
would soon be so dedicated. Let all present, irrespective of age, so regard
it. Let them see not a finger is put on it to mar it any way. Let them see
that the names upon it now would be equally as visible for future generation to
see.鈥
