Caergwrle Castle bracken bashing

Local residents, 天涯社区 Countryside Service Ranger, Stephen Lewis and Phil
Pearce from Ecological Land Management spent the afternoon carrying out bracken
control at Caergwrle Castle on Sunday.
Bracken was bruised by hand and hand tools, and Phil provided a tractor with
heavy duty bracken flail, free of charge for the day.
Bracken is a plant, that if not controlled dominates the whole area. The area
at the top of the castle is an upland heathland area, and should compose of
grassland, heather and billbery.
If done annually, snapping the bracken at the base but leaving the plant
attached to its roots, stunts the growth so it is easier to control.
Stephen Lewis said: Many thanks to the Caergwrle and District Community
Action Group, and to Phil Pearce for their efforts today. I look forward to
working with the group again to tackle small tree regeneration and other small
projects on the site in the future.
Charlene Hartson, who runs the Caergwrle and District Community Action Group
added:
We had a great day yesterday doing the bracken bashing. Five of us run the
group voluntarily. We are trying to improve Caergwrle and the local areas by
doing similar projects such as the Community Clean up that took place in June.
