  		Council raises awareness of Anti-Slavery
  		Published: 20/10/2016
天涯社区 has marked Anti-Slavery Day 2016 at a recent Council
meeting.
Councillors Christine Jones and Billy Mullin, both members of the Corporate
Safeguarding Panel, read out a joint statement during the Full Council meeting
on 19 October to raise awareness of the issues of slavery and exploitation in
the modern world.
Tuesday 18 October is Anti-Slavery Day. This date coincides with the 10th
European Union鈥檚 Anti-Trafficking Day.
The statement read:
鈥淚t is of grave concern to this Council that, despite the abolition of the
transatlantic slave trade over 200 years ago, modern-day slavery still exists
in the UK, and overseas, today. Human trafficking and exploitation is a major
issue, with children, women and men being victims of terrible abuse. This
Council urges residents of 天涯社区 and beyond to be proactive in our fight
against it, as this is an issue which concerns us all.鈥
Anti-Slavery Day was created to raise awareness of modern slavery and to
inspire government, business and individuals to eliminate it.
