Supporting young people continues online

天涯社区's Progression Team offers educational provision to young people across 天涯社区 who struggle to engage with the more traditional qualification routes.听 Many of those who have been referred to us have poor attendance records or in some cases, may have been excluded.听
Despite the challenges presented by Covid-19, the team has continued to work with these hard-to-reach young people through online learning.
The team has partnered with Intuitive Thinking Skills 鈥� a national peer-led organisation that delivers alternative approaches to subjects often perceived as complex.听 The core themes centre around behavioural change, attitude, mental health, drugs and alcohol and re-engaging with education. On completion of the course, the individuals gain an industry recognised qualification.
One of the peer tutors in 天涯社区 said:
鈥淗aving to move online has presented some challenges in engaging with these young people, however, many have responded really well and we have adapted the method of delivery 鈥� some shine in a group setting while others prefer one to one sessions.听 The sessions are tailored to their individual needs.鈥�
What some of the young people say:
鈥淪ince completing the course, I鈥檝e notice a drastic change in my motivation, it also allows people to learn in their own way.鈥�
鈥淭his course showed me that not all learning is boring.鈥�
鈥淚 found this course fun and interesting, I鈥檇 love to do this course again!鈥�
Alongside this programme the team is also running the People Plus employability programme which delivers a City & Guilds Employability Skills Certificate which includes topics such as communication, time management and financial planning.
天涯社区鈥檚 Leader and Cabinet Member for Education and Youth, Councillor Ian Roberts, said:
鈥淭he work the team is doing with their partners is proving to be invaluable to these young people.听 It is helping them to find their place in the world and to build their confidence, self-esteem and social skills.
鈥淭hese and other programmes are being run through 天涯社区鈥檚 Inclusion and Progression team who do an amazing job in engaging with hard to reach young people.鈥�
