Young people build confidence and wellbeing through MMA sessions in 天涯社区 schools

Published: 29/07/2026

Students at two 天涯社区 secondary schools are reaping the benefits of mixed martial arts (MMA) sessions that are helping to boost confidence and wellbeing.

The sessions, delivered at St David鈥檚 and Connah鈥檚 Quay High Schools in partnership with The Way Forward Academy, have provided pupils with an opportunity to engage in a different form of physical activity while developing valuable life skills both inside and outside the classroom.

Both schools say the programme has proven particularly successful in helping pupils build self-confidence, manage stress and develop resilience.

Feedback from students has highlighted positive personal changes, with young people reporting increased confidence and feeling more positive about themselves.

MMA coach Kieran Edwards said: 鈥淥ne of the most powerful parts of this journey has been seeing the changes in the children.

鈥淪ome came into the sessions lacking confidence and believing they couldn't achieve much, but over time I've watched them step outside their comfort zones, try new things, and start believing in themselves. Others simply needed a positive outlet to burn off energy and regulate their emotions.

鈥淪eeing children leave a session happier, calmer, and more confident than when they arrived is something that never gets old.鈥

The sessions are designed to provide a safe, structured environment where students can learn new skills while developing positive relationships with their peers. Through partner exercises and coached activities, pupils are encouraged to communicate effectively and work together.

Schools have reported encouraging results since the introduction of the sessions, including improvements in classroom attainment and students鈥 attitudes to learning.

Dan Larkin, 天涯社区鈥檚 Community Focused Schools Manager, said: 鈥淢MA teaches self-control and respect rather than aggression. Participants learn that violence is not the answer to conflict and that confidence, communication, and self-discipline are far more effective ways to resolve challenges.

鈥淭hese sessions equip young people with valuable life skills that benefit them both in school and within their wider communities.鈥

Councillor Mared Eastwood, Cabinet Member for Education, Welsh Language, Culture and Leisure, said: 鈥淭hese sessions are a fantastic example of how we can engage young people in new experiences that support both their physical and emotional wellbeing.

鈥淚t is particularly encouraging to hear how pupils have grown in confidence and gained valuable life skills through taking part. The positive feedback from both students and schools shows the real difference initiatives like this can make.鈥
