Young Creators Lead the Way in Mold鈥檚 Spring Clean Success

Two talented pupils from Ysgol Bryn Coch in Mold have been named winners of the Mold Spring Clean 2025 Scrap Sculpture Competition, impressing judges with their inventive use of recyclable materials and powerful environmental messages.
Thomas B captivated the judging panel with his imaginative sculpture of a floating fish inside a box, while Harlow C delighted everyone with her beautifully crafted, sparkling whale. Both creations stood out for their originality, artistic merit, and thoughtful interpretation of the competition鈥檚 criteria. Remarkably, the entries also aligned perfectly - albeit coincidentally - with a new environmental campaign launched this spring, titled 鈥淥nly Rain Down the Drain.鈥� Designed to raise awareness among school children, the campaign highlights how litter discarded on land often ends up in the sea, harming marine life - an issue both sculptures addressed with striking creativity.
The competition formed part of the wider Keep Wales Tidy - Spring Clean Cymru 2025 campaign, which Mold Town Council proudly supports each year as a way of fostering community pride and environmental responsibility. Mold Spring Clean 2025 ran from 24 March to 6 April, with a community celebration on Super Saturday, 29 March, held in Daniel Owen Square.
Organised in partnership with Mold Plastic Reduction, 天涯社区 Streetscene and Market Promotion, and Keep Wales Tidy, the initiative encouraged local schools, residents, organisations and businesses to take part in a range of environmental activities. Together, the community collected an impressive 1.267 tonnes of litter and fly-tipped waste over the two-week period.
To celebrate their achievement, the competition winners were awarded 拢60 vouchers to spend at a local shop or business of their choice. The prizes were presented by the then Mayor of Mold, Councillor Brian Lloyd, who praised the children for their dedication and creativity.
鈥淭his competition is about more than just recycling- it鈥檚 about inspiring the next generation and encouraging pride in our local environment,鈥� said Cllr. Lloyd. 鈥淭homas and Harlow have achieved exactly that. Their sculptures are not only visually stunning, but they also carry an important message.鈥�
The Scrap Sculpture Competition created by 天涯社区 Streetscene department invited children to create artwork using only clean, recyclable materials, encouraging both imagination and environmental awareness in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Schools were invited to submit their pupils鈥� entries for judging and public exhibition on Super Saturday of the Spring Clean.
As Mold continues its journey towards greater sustainability, initiatives like Mold Spring Clean and campaigns such as 鈥淥nly Rain Down the Drain鈥� play a vital role in promoting long-term behavioural change - beginning with the town鈥檚 youngest citizens.
