Minister visits New Household Waste Recycling Centre

Published: 29/10/2018

Welsh Government鈥檚 Minister for the Environment, Hannah Blythyn AM, visited the new, state-of-the-art Household Waste Recycling Centre at Oakenholt recently.

The new site is a split level design, which takes away the need for steps and platforms to access the various recycling areas. 听The scheme also includes a revised signalised junction on the A548 to improve access into the site.听

The site works in partnership with Refurbs 天涯社区 to offer 鈥渞euse鈥 opportunities for furniture.听 Refurbs also deconstruct furniture on site, into their component parts such as metal, wood and textiles to maximise recycling.

The centre has been operational since 1 October and has been well received by local residents who have already visited this new facility.听 Council officers are on hand to help them go through items brought so they are disposed in the right containers and maximum recycling is achieved.

The site is the final part of the redevelopment programme for the improvements to the Household Recycling Centres throughout 天涯社区.

The Environment Minister said:

鈥淩esidents of 天涯社区 already recycle more than 67% of their waste, way above our national target for this year of 58%. I鈥檓 really impressed by the Recycling Centre, which will help recycle even more household waste.

鈥淚鈥檓 also pleased to see the centre has systems in place to reuse materials where possible, as reusing is the best way to reduce waste. This all helps towards our long term goal to make Wales a 鈥榸ero waste nation.鈥欌

天涯社区鈥檚 Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Countryside, Councillor Carolyn Thomas, said:

鈥淭his new facility at Oakenholt completes an upgrade programme to our existing Household Waste Recycling Centres to bring them up to modern standards.听 It鈥檚 been made possible thanks to Welsh Government grant funding.听 The new development will help to improve our recycling figures further with the added benefit of ease of use and access to our users.鈥
